Praying Together 24 / 10 | 24 hours / Ten days
When I came to be your Director of Missions six and one half years ago I did not realize how much this calling would change me. I had always focused my attention on one church. I sought to be that church’s spiritual leader and pastor, nurturing and loving the people and seeking to reach the lost. But, becoming a “missionary” has helped me see the bigger picture. In short, God has caused me to see how badly Baptist people need revival—a fresh and refreshing moving of the Holy Spirit over all His churches in our great and growing city. I have a growing conviction the we must unite in prayer to align ourselves with God and with desperation ask Him to be present with us. Prayer is not so much about getting God to do something as it is about us experiencing Him and surrendering to Him.
With this strong conviction I want to invite you to “Ten Days of Prayer.” We will start on Ascension Day and pray every hour of every day until Pentecost Sunday. From May 18, 2007 to May 27, 2007 we will be praying. I ask you to join in united prayer by coming to a designated prayer room at the San Antonio Baptist Association Building in one hour segments 24 hours a day, seven days each week. This designated room will be for this purpose and a schedule will be established where persons from all our churches can sign up. We will provide security throughout the night and WILL be open 24/7. The focus will be experiencing God, praying for revival in our churches, and praying for God to draw the lost to Himself. My hope is the young and old, and those from small churches and large churches will come to pray and seek God in their lives, in the churches and for the people of San Antonio. I hope we can experience the supernatural working of God among us to draw all of us close to Him. The only goal is to help us become all God wants us to be.
The word Pentecost literally means 50. It was the day God, the Holy Spirit, came upon His people and birthed the church. As Luke reports it, the believers had gathered together after Jesus Christ ascended to the Father. They were talking, remembering, praying, and wondering what was next. On the morning of Pentecost these disciples, “lit up” by the Holy Spirit, came out from the room and started telling the people on the streets and in the market places about Jesus. It was from this out pouring of the Holy Spirit on those in the Upper Room, as recorded in Acts 2, related to Joel 2 and promised by Jesus in Acts 1:8, the witness of the Church was born. The emphasis was on empowerment through the Holy Spirit; therefore, the people were able to witness about Jesus the Christ.
For us 21st century Christians, the knowledge that God the Holy Spirit is at work in us, renewing us, calling us to His mission , sends us into our world to be bold and powerful witnesses in His stead. In this year that begins our 150th year as an Association of Baptist Churches, never have we needed more to join God in His work and be empowered through His Blessed Holy Spirit.
Let us unite and pray 10 days, 24 hours that we will be surrendered to and controlled by the very Presence of God in our midst.
